If you’ve ever watched a fight between Julio Cesar Chavez and Meldrick Taylor, you know that they are two of the most famous fighters in the world. Their bout in 1990 was one of the most anticipated events of the decade and they were both considered the best boxers of their weight class. Unfortunately for the former, Taylor didn’t have the kind of success that Chavez had.

Before facing Chavez, Taylor had a record of 38-8-1. In addition to his success as a professional boxer, he also enjoyed an illustrious amateur career. His amateur records were a stellar 99-4. He fought in the lightweight and featherweight divisions during his boxing career. He has a net worth of $8 million.

It wasn’t long before Taylor moved up to 147 pounds and got a shot at the welterweight title. After a couple of successful fights, he lost it to Crisanto Espana in 1992. Then, in 1994, he got another chance at the welterweight title. However, this time, it wasn’t as close.

This was the end of the line for Taylor’s career. He finished with 20 knockouts. But he didn’t quite get to the top three. Instead, he settled for a spot in the International Boxing Hall of Fame.

Taylor is a native of Philadelphia. He owns a home in the Strawberry Mansion neighbourhood, across from Mount Sinai Tabernacle Baptist Church. In the house, you’ll find red curtains and a handwritten sign advertising a two-bedroom apartment for rent.

While in the midst of a career that was undoubtedly promising, Taylor faced legal issues. In 1997, he was suspended by the State Athletic Commission. A few years later, he was charged with insurance fraud. Eventually, he was convicted and pleaded guilty.

At the age of 17, he earned a spot on the 1984 U.S. Olympic team. That same year, he won the gold medal in the featherweight division. He also won the gold medal in the lightweight division at the 1985 World Championships.

Despite losing the 140-pound title to Chavez, he had a great career in the sport. He made a good living in the 1990s, earning around $5 million. And he was paid a lot of money for his bouts. In fact, he earned more than six million dollars for his pay-per-view fight against Oscar de la Hoya.

The first big loss for Taylor came in his most famous bout against Chavez. On March 17, 1990, Taylor took on Chavez in Las Vegas. Chavez was a Mexican boxer who had been named the world’s best pound for pound in the 1990s. When the fight started, Taylor was up by six counts. However, he was floored with 17 seconds left in the eighth round.

Taylor was then hospitalised for four days. Later, he was diagnosed with dehydration and blood in his urine. The result of these incidents was a diagnosis of pugilistic dementia, which caused his speech to become slurred.

During this period of time, Taylor was also arrested on a number of charges. He was accused of aggravated assault, terroristic threats, and possession of an instrument of crime.
