A Minnesota native, Dahl was stage-struck in high school and made her way to New York. After modeling she signed with Warner Bros, making her first credited appearance in the 1947 musical My Wild Irish Rose and later moved to MGM where she appeared as Van Johnson’s glamorous ex-fiancee in 1948’s The Bride Goes Wild.
She went on to star in many films, mainly westerns and adventure movies during the 1950s. Her most notable roles included Journey to the Center of the Earth (1959), in which she teamed up with James Mason and Pat Boone as Victorian explorers who burrow deep into the Earth’s core.
In addition to her career as an actress, Dahl was also a fashion model and founded her own cosmetics company. She also wrote more than two dozen books on astrology and was a practicing numerologist.
Her first husband was actor Lex Barker of Tarzan fame; her second was dashing Argentina-born leading man Fernando Lamas; her third was oilman Christian Holmes, III; and her fourth and fifth husbands were Fleischmann’s yeast heir Christopher Holmes, wine importer Alexis Lichine and investor Rounsevelle Schaum. Her sixth husband was businessman Marc Rosen, whom she married in 1984. She is survived by her son Lorenzo from her second marriage, daughter Carole from her third marriage and a son Stephen from her fifth marriage.

Initially, she was under contract at Warner Bros. but left the studio to join MGM, where she costarred with Red Skelton in A Southern Yankee and Watch the Birdie. She also appeared in two Westerns, Ambush and The Outriders, as well as the musical Three Little Words.
After her film career, she branched out to become a beauty writer and cosmetics executive. She founded Arlene Dahl Enterprises and wrote a syndicated beauty column, “Let’s Be Beautiful,” for the Chicago Tribune, which ran for more than two decades.
She was married six times, including to actors Lex Barker and Fernando Lamas. Her other husbands included Fleischmann’s yeast heir Christopher Holmes, wine importer Alexis Lichine and investor Rounsevelle Schaum. She is survived by her son, Lamas; a daughter, Carole Delouvrier; and another son, Stephen Schaum. She was also a grandmother to nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
